The Silver Gloves were established in 1999 when a few hardy 50+ women decided that they wanted to play the game of softball with individuals their own age.  While they may have lost a step or two, they still have the passion for the sport and the camaraderie that can only be found in a dugout.  The Gloves travel to various regional tournaments and have even taken their bats to the state of Hawaii.  All skill levels are accepted, this program also practices year-round, weather permitting.  Even then, when weather is an obstacle, they go to the batting cage!  The Gloves have also been recognized as official Affiliates of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) You will probably be more familiar with the movie "A League of Their Own" which was based on the lives of these women who played baseball when the men were at war in the 40's and early 50's. ​​

The Silver Shufflers is a group of shuffleboard players who preserve the sport once reserved for cruise ships!  They welcome all skill levels from beginner to advanced and love to encourage new players to join.  While the sport might not require physical prowess and can be played by those confined to walkers and wheelchairs, the techniques of combination shots and angles draw all levels of ability to this sport.   

The Shufflers have accumulated 11 roll-out courts, together with discs, cues, and scoreboards, and play at Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center every Tuesday from 1:00 - 4:00 with the exception of June and July when they forego the use of the gym to the Youth Program.  

Established in 1991, the Canyon Nets senior women's basketball program began with a small group of women who wanted to play 3 on 3 basketball at the National Senior Games.  They practiced on an outdoor asphalt court against senior men who were kind enough to give them some competition.  After participating 1993, these women came back to NM with a dream and in 1995 sent two teams to the National Games with one bringing home a bronze medal. 

The Canyon Nets program has continued to grow and in 2016 celebrated its 25th year of touching the lives of women who just wanted to play the sport.  Many of the original members had never been afforded the opportunity to play competitive basketball, but thanks to Title IX, most of its newest members have been participating most of their lives.  Besides being a competitive force with the senior women's basketball community, the Canyon Nets also provides a support group that has helped its members through the loss of spouses and children and major medical illnesses.

The dream of many women over the age of 50 who wanted to play softball with their peers instead of the galloping gazelles who played recreational softball in the city league, came true in 2016.  This is thanks primarily to the perseverance and dedication of Pat Stanalonis, a player and former Executive Officer of the Silver Gloves softball program. Pat recruited enough players who wanted to play against others in their age group and finally the SWSL met the 6-team league criteria of the city to use the fields for a senior league.  

Pat didn't stop there, however, and negotiated with the city to rent the fields to the SWSL.  The SWSL would become a separate entity comprised of 50+ teams that would play by senior rules, develop their own schedule, and hire their own umpires. The women who play in this league may have lost a step or two, but they love the game and hope to encourage additional teams to join!​
